More lives saved through organ donation in 2019

Thanks to the generosity of 262 organ donors and their families, LifeLink of Florida provided a record number of organs for transplant, with 756 organs transplanted during 2019.

This marks the most organ donors facilitated by LifeLink of Florida during a year with nearly a 7% increase over last year.

This increased donor activity translates to a nearly 27% increase in organ donors and an 18% increase in organs transplanted over five years, as compared to calendar year 2015.

Kidneys remain the most needed organ for transplantation..

Thanks to the efforts of LifeLink of Florida, the number of kidneys transplanted increased more than 26% over that same time period.

LifeLink of Florida credits the support of donor families, the forethought of individuals who chose to join their state donor registry, continuously improved processes, staff commitment to excellence, strong hospital relationships and education, and community partnerships and public education.

Even as LifeLink of Florida staff and leadership celebrate increases in lives saved and the opportunity to facilitate the decisions of donors and their families to become organ donors, there is a continued awareness of thousands of patients still awaiting transplant.

As a result, the 2019 milestones are not a place to rest, but instead are for reflection on how we can continue to do better than each previous year.

LifeLink of Florida is the federally designated, non-profit community service organization dedicated to the recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation in west and southwest Florida.

LifeLink can also be of assistance with coordinating a presentation to local civic groups on the importance of donation.
