Runners invited to Trek for CHEC 5K/10K

All runners and walkers are invited to participate in the inaugural Trek for CHEC 5K/10K event on Saturday, Jan. 25. This event will feature competitive runs and fun walks for people of all ages and is a fundraiser for the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center Inc.

There will be food trucks, a band, special activities such as “how to fish” lessons for younger children, a door prize raffle, 25/25-50 raffle and more. CHEC’s mission is to build awareness and encourage conservation of our area’s rich natural resources while protecting the environment. Proceeds will help further environmental educational programs for children and adults.

The first event is a 10K competitive run. The second event is a dual 5K competitive run and 5K fun walk with the runners out front and the walkers following immediately behind. The third event is a 1-mile fun walk for younger children. The first event begins at 7:45 a.m. Several trail routes will be used simultaneously and at staggered times — see the trail maps for details at www.runsignup.com/Race/FL/PuntaGorda/TrekforCHEC5K10K.

Participants will arrive/park at the Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park at 12301 Burnt Store Road, Punta Gorda, approximately 1.3 miles south of CHEC, and be shuttled to CHEC at 10941 Burnt Store Road, Punta Gorda. Signs will be posted to direct you. Allow approximately 20 minutes to accommodate shuttle run times from the state park to CHEC and back. Participants should plan to be at the CHEC location at least 20 minutes before their event begins.

Trophies will be given in the male/ female master, grand master, senior grand master and veteran categories for competitive run placements, and ribbons for the 1-mile fun walkers.

Last-minute registration for these events is available the day of the race onsite. Note: There are no refunds and no rain date.

CHEC has special speaker at fundraiser

The Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center welcomes back historian John McCarthy, executive director of Historic Spanish Point, for a fundraising event at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Cedar Point Environmental Park, 2300 Placida Road, Englewood. Mr. McCarthy will make a presentation on the impacts of rising seas to the preservation strategies of local historical treasures, such as the Manasota Key burial site, Historic Spanish Point and Egmont Key. Learn how archeologists, local citizens and Florida’s Native Americans are working to protect the past.

This program will be conducted at Cedar Point Environmental Park.

Admission is $12 ($8 for Friends of CHEC) and includes complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, as well as the lecture itself. Socializing starts at 5 p.m., with the lecture to begin at 5:30 p.m.
