Charlotte County Florida Weekly

BEST BELOVED LOCAL FIGURE WE LOST (MALE)

Dan Mearns

Just about everybody who knew Dan Mearns liked him. He was a kind, happy, teddy bear of a guy with an “Awww, shucks” Kentucky drawl, quick wit and friendly demeanor. The 73-year-old spent 20 years doing editorial work in the racehorse field before moving to Southwest Florida, where he worked at the Charlotte Sun as copy desk chief and editor of the Business section. Mr. Mearns was active in the arts community, serving on the board of Charlotte Players, and worked in public relations for Charlotte State Bank & Trust, using his editorial skills to promote those organizations. His death in January from complications of COVID-19 sent a wave of shock and sadness across Charlotte County. Mr. Mearns was definitely one of the good guys who will be fondly remembered. An occasional freelance writer for Florida Weekly — and a frequent contributor to our BEST issues — he will be sorely missed.
